A comedy of confusion by Alan Ayckbourn
". . . People in real life are generally irritating and unpredictable and ultimately disappointing. Unlike my characters who bloody well behave themselves and do as they're told. Most of them. Most of the time." (Algy Waterbridge)
In the real world, over-the-hill author Algy Waterbridge sits in his summerhouse ploughing through his 33rd crime novel. In the world of the book – which appears whenever Algy starts typing away at his keyboard – his gruff Yorkshire copper DCI Tommy Middlebrass is in hot pursuit of a serial killer, aided by his new sidekick, “southern softie" DS Gemma Price.
Back in the real world, increasingly irritable Algy must contend with various interruptions, including his long-suffering PA, a wife who no longer remembers who he is, a self-obsessed journalist, and his wideboy publisher who hasn’t actually read any of his books. Gradually, fiction and reality start to blur.
